Both Czechs ran only twelve hours after a successful relay, but they did not lack strength. With a great finish, Petržilková advanced from fifth to third place in a time of 51.30. She was thus only five hundredths short of her personal record from the national championship in Tábor,
Vondrová ran in the last, fastest heat, which was quickly started by Paulinová, a silver medalist from the last Olympic Games and last year’s World Championships. The Czech fourth-place finisher pushed through to fourth place, which was not enough for direct advancement, but the time of 50.92 was. Vondrová ran under 51 seconds for the first time in her career, which was 14th place overall. Petržilková recorded the 22nd time.
Surprisingly, among the men, the fastest was only twenty-year-old Norwegian Havard Bentdal Ingvaldsen, who ran a national record of 44.39. He improved by more than one and a half seconds from last year. Three ex-world champions Wade van Niekerk from South Africa, Steven Gardiner from the Bahamas and Kirani James from Grenada advanced without problems, winning their heats. Defending champion American Michael Norman had an unsuccessful season and did not fly to Budapest.
Krsek took sixth place in the last run and with a time of 45.99 was significantly behind his best this year from Zlatá tretra of 45.62. Unlike the fourth-place finishers, he didn’t have enough strength left after Saturday’s success and took 36th place overall.
Even the pedestrian Eliška Martínková has already completed her race. Conditions in Budapest were challenging today due to the heat. “I didn’t do well, it was painful,” she said at the finish line. “The heat definitely didn’t help. I’ll have to solve some minor problems with my shoulder now. I’m taking a lot of lessons from the whole season, I believe it will move me forward,” she concluded. The race was won by the Spaniard Maria Pérez, who added the second Spanish gold after compatriot Álvaro Martín.
