Recap: Dynamo Dresden Draws 1-1 Against Freiburg II, Crisis Continues

At the end of the 33rd match day, Dynamo Dresden couldn’t get beyond a 1-1 draw against bottom team Freiburg II on Sunday evening, which means the SGD is still in crisis. Despite many chances, the Saxons only managed one goal in the first half, while Freiburg equalized with a dream goal at their first opportunity. In the second half, despite a few chances on both sides, nothing changed in the result. Thanks to the draw, Dynamo draws level with Preußen Münster in terms of points and climbs into the relegation place thanks to the better goal difference. Freiburg remains bottom of the table and is all but relegated, 14 points behind.

Dresden usury of opportunities – dream goal Sturm

Dresden arrived with only one win from the last seven games, most recently a 3-1 home defeat against 1. FC Saarbrücken. In comparison to this, Markus initially made two changes to the starting eleven: Bünning and Lemmer pushed Arslan and Meißner to the bench. Freiburg coach Thomas Stamm even made four substitutions compared to the 1:2 defeat in Aue. Yilmaz, Ambros, Fahrner and Sturm replace Rüdlin, Lienhard (both yellow-suspended), Al Ghaddioui (yellow-red suspension) and Breunig (professional squad).

From the start, Dynamo tried hard to forget the weak last few weeks and got off to a very committed start. The Saxons almost got their reward in the 4th minute of the game when Lemmer was able to pass the ball past SCF keeper Sauter, but then failed to put the shot on goal because Fahrner threw himself into the shot in desperate need. As a result, the SGD played almost exclusively. But the shots from Hauptmann (5th), Will (9th) and Zimmerschied (13th) did not find their way into the goal. After Dresden’s very lively opening phase, the young Freiburg team managed to calm the game down a bit. However, the regular team still had little success moving forward.

Instead, Dresden became more dangerous again and tried a shot from Zimmerschied. Sauter was able to save the SGD midfielder’s first attempt (27′), but just one turn of the pointer later, the Freiburg keeper was powerless against an almost identical shot from around 20 meters away from the goal. Zimmerschied’s precise shot hit the net with the help of the inside post (28). And Dresden almost followed up: Freiburg defender Fallmann played a back pass right into the feet of Lemmer, who finished free in front of Sauter from around ten meters away from the goal, but put the ball just next to the post (30th). A wake-up call for Freiburg, who subsequently appeared offensively for the first time – and struck ice cold with their first chance to score. After a Baur free kick, Sturm came to the finish from the backcourt and hammered the ball – slightly deflected by Kutschke – perfectly into the right corner from almost 20 meters away from the goal. A dream goal to make it 1-1 (41st)! With this result we went into the break.

Open exchange of blows in the second round

Despite the result, SCF coach Stamm saw a need for changes and made two changes at halftime. And the changes had an effect: Freiburg were now much more dangerous offensively than in the first half. Sturm could have scored a brace in the 55th minute – if not even should. After a sharp cross from substitute Lungwitz, the Freiburg attacker got to the ball in the center in front of the empty goal, but poked it past the box. In direct return, Dresden also recorded the first top-class player of the second round. Sauter punched a cross right at the feet of Kutschke, who immediately looked for a shot from around 14 meters. But Fahrner spectacularly scratched the ball off the line (56th).

The game now offered the best entertainment. After a Broll mistake in the build-up game, Baur sank the ball into the Dresden goal. However, referee Hussein refused to recognize the goal because Baur was just offside at the time of the pass (57′). A few minutes later, Freiburg scored again thanks to the striking storm (61′). Only after a few exchanges on both sides did the open exchange of blows subside again. In the final phase, the guests from Dresden took more and more control. But neither Hauptmann after a cross (77th) nor Meißner with a volley from the edge of the penalty area (87th) could seriously threaten the Freiburg goal. Since a Meissner free kick from a promising position also fizzled out in the ninth (!) minute of stoppage time, the score ultimately remained 1-1, a result that was not undeserved due to the Breisgauer team’s courageous performance in the second half.

Dresden was only able to win once in the last eight games. By winning the points, the Saxons at least draw level with Preußen Münster and move into the relegation place thanks to the better goal difference. The gap to the direct promotion places is now already six points. Freiburg remains bottom of the table. The gap to the saving bank is now 14 points. With five games left, the chances of staying in the league are only theoretical. Dresden continues next Saturday with a home game against Viktoria Köln. A day later, Freiburg II visits Preußen Münster.
