June 30 marks 21 years since Latin American giants Brazil won the World Cup title. Brazil’s fifth title was in the 17th edition of the World Cup. The tournament was held from 31 May to 30 June 2002 in Japan and South Korea.
This tournament had the distinction of being the first World Cup hosted jointly by two countries and the first World Cup to be staged in Asia. Brazil won the title by defeating Germany in the final. Despite having won the title many times, this was the first World Cup where the two countries fought head-to-head. Brazil defeated Germany in the final by two one-sided goals.
Brazil were in a relatively small group with Turkey, Costa Rica and China. Brazil cruised through all the group games with ease.
Brazil reached the final by beating Belgium in the last 16, England in the quarter and Turkey in the semi. Ronaldo Nozario, who scored eight goals in the tournament and won the Golden Boot, shone for Brazil in the tournament.
Meanwhile, five-time world champions Brazil have not won a World Cup since 2002. In 2022, the team was eliminated from the Qatar World Cup after losing to Croatia in the quarter-finals.
