Recall Notice: Manufacturing Defects in Nissan, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, Ds, and Jaguar Cars

When an automaker issues a recall involving a large number of vehicles that need to be urgently returned for service, it means that there is an issue that needs to be addressed. One example comes from the Nissan brand, which is facing an incident involving some cars affected by a manufacturing defect, as indicated in the bulletin. Here is the big picture:

Nissan

The cars from the recall involved are Nissan Note, Serena, Aura, Leaf e Kicks, produced and sold in recent years. Approximately 669,000 units were sold in Japan, with the rest being shipped worldwide.

Concerning the seriousness of the problems, the electrical system on board is the source of concern due to a manufacturing defect which, at best, can cause inconvenience to the owner and, at worst, can lead to the disengage from cruise control at high speeds. The car manufacturer has asked the interested parties to go to the assistance service for a solution.

Fiat and Alfa Romeo

Stellantis has issued a model recall Fiat Tipo, Fiat 500X e Alfa Romeo Tonale, which was disseminated through the Rapex Safety Gate portal. The reason for the recall is the same for which owners of the new Alfa Romeo SUV were previously asked to return to the workshop a few months ago. The European bulletin provides information on the potential fire risk related to the 48V lithium battery in hybrid models.

Il potential fire hazard could suddenly occur due to a defect in the 48 volt battery booster valve. It may cause the battery to lose function and overheat if water gets in, increasing the risk of fire. The product does not comply with type-approval regulation and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, as well as of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

Jeep

The cars affected by the recall are Jeep Renegade e Jeep Compass e-Hybrid, due to a potential fire hazard associated with the lithium battery. The recall of the Jeep Renegade and Jeep Compass e-Hybrid was communicated through the Rapex Safety Gate portal. According to the recall agency, the lithium battery issue is related to possible defects in the battery and water intrusion. The potential risk of fire, in the event of a short circuit, prompted Stellantis to issue the recall identified as 59A for the 48V Jeep Mild Hybrid models.

At the heart of the call is the low capacity lithium battery (0.8 kWh) which powers the electric motor integrated in the gearbox, which acts as a booster and assists the internal combustion engine while driving. The European bulletin explains that “improper production of the battery can lead to its loss of functionality due to water infiltration. This can cause the battery to overheat, increasing the risk of fire. The product does not comply with the regulation on type approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, as well as systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles”.

Ds

Ds4 e Ds7 Crossback plug-in have been subject to a European recall due to the potential fire hazard associated with the lithium battery. The problem, as specified on the Rapex Safety Gate portal, can occur especially during the recharging phase due to a malfunction of the control system. According to the bulletin of the European Commission, the potential risk of fire can occur during the lithium battery charging via charging station.

To address this issue, Stellantis has launched the call with JVD internal code. The European bulletin explains that “the temperature sensor on the charging cable could be faulty, which can cause the cable itself to overheat, generating a fire risk. The product does not comply with the regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, as well as systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles”.

Jaguar

The call of Jaguar I-Pace in Europe, notified through the Rapex Safety Gate portal, it was issued due to a potential risk of overheating of the lithium battery. The details of the recall, provided by Rapex concern the cars subject to inspection. A previous recall had already occurred for the Jaguar I-Pace due to possible accelerated deterioration of the high voltage battery, which could pose a fire risk.

The new recall indicates that the high voltage battery it can also have an overheating problem, which could trigger a phenomenon known as thermal runaway. As stated in the European Commission Bulletin, “thermal overloads can occur under the vehicle, where the high-voltage battery is located. As a result, there is the risk of fire and smoke which can cause injury to the occupants or injury to people outside the vehicle. The product does not comply with the regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles”.
