The Wismarer Sonnenstromfabrik and the REC Group want to cooperate. To do this, they want to set up a production facility for high-performance modules with REC’s butterfly technology in Wismar.
REC Group, an international solar energy company headquartered in Norway, and Sonnenstromfabrik (CS Wismar GmbH), a manufacturer of photovoltaic modules in Europe, plan to enter into a memorandum of understanding on a strategic partnership.
The focus of the planned cooperation is the development of the production of high-performance modules with REC’s patented butterfly technology at the Sonnenstromfabrik site in Wismar. The partners are also aiming for joint projects in European markets. With a differentiated product portfolio, Sonnenstromfabrik has specialized in the premium segments in the photovoltaic sector. Through the partnership with REC, she wants to accelerate the increase in efficiency in photovoltaic modules.
The use of REC’s split cell and junction box technology enables higher yields even with partial shading. The collaboration with REC also gives Sonnenstromfabrik a head start in optimizing butterfly technology for PERC modules.
“Avoid patent disputes”
Under the terms of the memorandum, the parties will also avoid any dispute related to REC’s EP 3 017 520 patent. This refers to REC’s Leapfrog and award-winning split cell and junction box technology. An agreement on mutual cooperation will be concluded at a later date. In so doing, the parties expect it to include a license to REC’s EP 3 017 520 patent. REC split cell and junction box technology has been used in REC products for more than half a decade. It is therefore a key feature of REC solar modules from the TwinPeak 4, N-Peak 2, Alpha and Alpha Pure series.
The companies have been cooperating on low-carbon products from Sonnenstromfabrik for several years. For this purpose, REC supplies sustainably produced wafers from the production site in Norway.
Split solar cells
Bernhard Weilharter, Managing Director of solar power factory / CS Wismar GmbH explains: “Through the strategic partnership with REC, we will further accelerate our path to uncompromising high-performance solar power plant technology. REC’s patented split cell and junction box technology has become imperative as solar cells continue to grow in size. The cells must be divided to reduce the currents to a level that the inverters can handle. REC’s innovative technology is widely recognized in the industry for delivering unmatched performance and efficiency gains.”
“At REC, we are aware that a real energy transition is only possible with bold innovations,” says Jan Enno Bicker, CEO of the REC Group. “Given the urgency of climate change, we must accelerate the spread of high-efficiency clean technologies now. As a multiple award winner and pioneer in pioneering solar products, we are proud to join forces with a premium brand like Sonnenstromfabrik and provide access to our leading technology in a way that recognizes REC’s hard work and investment and encourages fair competition respected. This will provide consumers with the greatest possible performance and benefits.”
