Rebuilding Derna: Overcoming the Aftermath of a Devastating Flood in Libya’s East

The Libyan East is still groaning under the repercussions of the flood, which killed and displaced thousands of people and turned Derna, which was called the bride of the eastern coast of Libya, into a ghost town.

The spokesman for the Libyan National Army, Major General Ahmed Al-Mismari, revealed that Storm Daniel destroyed the road network and destroyed the bridges linking the east of the city to its west, and about 70 percent of the infrastructure.

Meanwhile, local authorities in Derna began erecting a fence around the affected areas, in anticipation of disease outbreaks and to support relief operations.

When will Libya wake up from the shock? What is the way to rebuild what was destroyed by the disaster?

In this regard, the former Vice President of the Libyan Transitional Council, Abdel Hafeez Ghouga, said in his interview with the program “newsroomOn Sky News Arabia:

The situation in Derna is tragic and horrific. The reason is neglect, chaos, and lack of institutions. Derna belongs to the east, but the responsibility lies with the unity government. The Libyan citizen is at the last attention of the authorities in the country.
