The reboot of the Australian series Heartbreak High has been nominated for an International Emmy Award. The series, co-created by Dutch producer NewBe, was announced on Tuesday as one of the nominees.

Producer Jeroen Koopman of NewBe said in an initial response to the nomination that he was “very proud”. “It was really a boyhood dream to be able to make this series as a company,” says Koopman. “The first season was already a great success in terms of viewing figures and reactions, but the fact that we are also receiving appreciation in this way with the nomination is really great.”

The series, which can be seen on Netflix, has a chance in the Kids: Live-Action category. Next Heartbreak High are also Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure (Japan), Memory Forest (Israel) and Unknown Land (Argentina) contenders for a statuette. The International Emmy Awards are American awards for the best TV programs made outside the US.

The nomination for Heartbreak High is for the first season of the series, for which Koopman from NewBe acquired the rights in 2019. The series, a co-production with Fremantle Australia, is a new version of the original teen series of the same name about students at a Sydney high school. The series was shown on VARA from 1994 to 1999. The second season of the reboot has now been filmed, but it is not yet clear when it will be shown.

The 2023 International Emmy Awards will be presented on November 20 in New York.
