For the first time in history, a woman will officiate an English Premier League match as chief referee. Rebecca Welch will write her name in history when she was assigned to the match of the 18th round of the English Championship Fulham – Burnley.
Rebecca Welch
Rebecca Welch began her career as an arbitrator back in 2010. In 2021, she worked on a League 2 match, and in the 2021/22 season, the referee gained experience working on two Championship matches.
And this is not the only surprise in the Premier League. For the first time in 15 years, a black referee, Sam Ellison, was appointed. His predecessor was Uriah Rennie, who last refereed at this level in 2008.
“These are turning points for Rebecca and Sam, two top judges. They deserve this opportunity,” said head of judges Howard Webb.
