Rebecca Peterson out in Båstad – reloading for the Olympics

There will be no singles final for Rebecca Peterson in Båstad. However, Mirjam Björklund is ready for her first WTA final – in doubles with Leonie Kung, Switzerland.

Rebecca Peterson was in her first semifinal in the WTA competition in Båstad. On the other side of the net, seventh-seeded Olga Govortsova waited, winning 6-3, 6-4.
– It was tough. I felt that I was playing tactically unwise and I did not follow the game plan I set up. She had to control far too much.

Rebecca would have played the semifinals in doubles in the last match of the center court on Friday, but was forced to leave the walk over due to injury.
– I have had some problems with the left side in the back which right now is holding me back a lot in the serve. I felt that I could not take the risk of a long-term injury given the year I had a lot of defects. I’m sorry I could not play the double and I want to take this opportunity to thank the audience who came and supported during the week. It meant a lot and I probably speak for all the Swedish players.

Are you worried about what to expect, the Olympics?
– I’m going home tonight and will check my back tomorrow. Hopefully I can get to grips with it as soon as possible. I believe and hope that it will be good in a short time. I’m going to the Olympics on Thursday so it’s fast pucks.

Mirjam Björklund is in her first WTA final. Together with Leonie Kung, Switzerland, it was a victory against Cornelia Lister and Erin Routliffe, New Zealand. After 2-6 in the first, Mirjam and Leonie were able to win the second set 6-2. The match tie break was swinging where Lister / Routliffe had 5-2, but Björklund / Kung turned around and won.
– They are experienced and good doubles players. We felt we should keep pushing and not change so much. We put the pressure on them in others. I had not really intended to play doubles but signed up and she got in touch. This is my first WTA final and we are so tagged for the final tomorrow, says Mirjam Björklund.

In Saturday’s doubles final, third-seeded Tereza Mihalikova, Slovakia and Kamilla Rakhimova, Russia will face off.
In the singles final, Olga Govortsova meets the Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz.

On Sunday, the men’s qualifiers start with several Swedish players.
