I was on oxygen from the start and they managed to take it off me this morning“, indicated Jean-Loup Lepan, this Saturday, October 12, 2024. The Samarian pilot, originally from Vimeu, took a photo from his hospital bed, in Amiens, to give reassuring news.

The one who took part in the Dakar three times, winning three stages in his category at the start of the year, fell heavily during the Morocco rally on October 8. He was then put in intensive care for three days in Casablanca and underwent an operation on his left lung.

Repatriated since Friday to the Amiens University Hospital, he saw his condition “stabilize“, he says in his post.

Being able to use only one arm, he dictated a message to his loved ones who relayed it on social networks. He mentions all his injuries: “In terms of fractures, the left side was affected (scapula, 10 ribs, pubis, 4 dorsal vertebrae and one lumbar vertebra). My condition is stable (sensation in all limbs) but I need to have surgery on the lumbar vertebra to stabilize it.

His father specifies that his operation will allow “to stabilize the pressure on the spinal cord“. Finally, Jean-Loup mentions “the good” mental  “to have returned to France“and see his family.”One day after another, the healing will be long, but I will come back stronger.” underlineshe.

The pilot is probably thinking about getting back in the saddle. This Friday, his father explained to us that a new motorcycle was waiting for him to participate in the 2025 Dakar, which is now “folded”. It will take several months for the Somme rider to get back on the handlebars of a motorcycle.
