Reasons why Malaysian cooking oil is cheaper than Indonesia

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Malaysia as the number two palm oil producing country in the world apparently sells cooking oil cheaper than Indonesia, the number one palm oil producer.

Cooking oil prices can be cheap in Malaysia because of subsidies from the government. Subsidies are given through the program cooking oil stabilization scheme (COSS).

However, not all cooking oil is subsidized by the government. A number of parties also sell unsubsidized cooking oil in sizes of 2 kg and 5 kg.

Unlike Indonesia, in Malaysia, cooking oil is sold in kilograms.

Citing the official page of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP), the price of subsidized cooking oil is only RM 2.5 per kilogram (kg) or IDR 8,500 (exchange rate of IDR 3,400 per ringgit).

With such a calculation, 1 liter of cooking oil is equivalent to 0.9 kg, the price is only Rp. 7,650.

According to various sources, the price of non-subsidized cooking oil in Malaysia is 27.9 RM for a 5 kg size or Rp. 95,100.

If it is calculated, then the price of non-subsidized cooking oil in the neighboring country is only around Rp. 19 thousand per kg.

The price applies in some parts of the region, such as Pulau Pinang.

Meanwhile, in Perlis, the price of non-subsidized cooking oil is 28.29 RM and in Kedah 28.9 RM.

From this fact, the price of cooking oil in Malaysia is still much cheaper, both subsidized and non-subsidized, compared to Indonesia.

For information, the price of packaged cooking oil in Indonesia is increasingly expensive after the government revoked the regulation on the highest retail price (HET) for packaging.

Previously, the HET for simple packaged cooking oil was set at IDR 13,500 per liter and premium at IDR 14 thousand per liter.

Now, the price of cooking oil in the market has jumped to the range of Rp20 thousand to Rp25 thousand per liter.
