Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
When it’s cold, it might be natural feet Feel cool. You may even need socks to stay comfortable sleep. But what if your feet still feel cold despite the heat? Or because your partner often protests because your feet are cold as ice.
If cold feet continue, this could be a health problem that is the cause. Danielle DesPres, a podiatrist and foot surgeon, explains that poor blood circulation causes cold feet. The blood vessels in the legs are located far from the heart, so the arteries tend to be small and can easily get clogged with plaque from fat.
“Because the arteries leading to the legs are the smallest in size, they will be affected first so that the feet become cold,” DesPres said, quoting from PopSugar.
Poor blood circulation is usually due to smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and age. Apart from poor blood circulation, cold feet can be caused due to diabetes and hypothyroidism or thyroid hormone deficiency disease. Sometimes, DesPres says, diabetes makes blood sugar levels consistently high, which can damage nerves and lead to neuropathy.
“As for hypothyroidism, the body does not produce enough hormones so that it affects the body’s metabolism which controls body temperature,” he said.
Lack of iron can make your feet cold. He said iron deficiency can lead to anemia. As a result, the feet keep getting cold.
How to deal with cold feet?
When you experience cold feet, you can warm them or treat the cause. DesPres suggests a simple method that you can try at home. Just wear thick socks or sandals when you’re indoors. Because blood circulation is the main cause of cold feet, start getting used to exercising.
“In simple terms walking can improve blood circulation. If you sit for a long time, rotating your ankles and moving your toes is a good start,” he added.
