Reasons for Covid-19 Survivors Still Need Vaccines

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – For those who have been exposed to COVID-19, still need to get the COVID-19 vaccine? The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has yet to make recommendations, but health experts recommend that you still need them.

Michelle Prickett, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, United States, says one reason is that you can still get it. COVID-19 again.

“Patients who have been infected with COVID-19 should still get the vaccine. We do not believe previous infections will lead to lifelong immunity. Current data suggest previous infections can provide immunity for about six months,” he said.

While not common, para survivors of COVID-19 can be re-infected. A report in the journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases revealed that a young man from Nevada’s second infection was worse than the first, leaving him hospitalized and oxygenated.

Virginia Tech department of health sciences professor Lisa Lee says you still need to be vaccinated because it’s not certain how long the immunity actually lasts.

“In terms of safety, it is not a problem to be vaccinated after recovering from COVID-19 and it will definitely help prevent someone from getting infected again,” he explained.

Another reason you should get vaccinated is that you can help keep other people safe from COVID-19.

“One of the main goals of vaccination is to protect people who can’t get the vaccine,” said Lee.

If enough people are vaccinated it will create herd immunity which is the protection of the community.

“If they can’t catch the infection, they can’t pass it on to vulnerable people. Basically, herd immunity creates a kind of barrier around the vulnerable. The infection can’t penetrate and reach them,” Lee said.
