Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Ministry of Commerce (Ministry of Trade) lays out a number of reasons for selling bulk cooking oil banned from January 1, 2021.
The Director General of Domestic Trade, Oke Nurwan, explained that regulations related to stopping the sale of bulk cooking oil were contained in the Minister of Trade Regulation (Permendag) Number 36 of 2020 concerning Mandatory Packaged Palm Cooking Oil.
In the regulation, the Ministry of Trade requires the sale of packaged cooking oil. However, bulk cooking oil can still be traded until December 31, 2021.
According to Oke, the rules were determined from the results of discussions with the stakeholder yinvolved as bulk oil producers.
“This is the result of discussions with stakeholder, both the manufacturer and various kinds stakeholder others, so there have been several delays and this Regulation of the Minister of Trade has been issued since March 31, 2020,” said Oke to CNNindonesia.com, Wednesday (24/11).
He also said that the socialization had been carried out and the transition to selling bulk cooking oil was explained until December 31, 2020.
Okay also explained that bulk cooking oil is very elastic to raw materials. This means that when the main raw material, crude palm oil (CPO) rises, the price of cooking oil also increases.
He considered this to be different from packaged cooking oil, whose price is more relatively controlled because it can be stored for a long time. This makes it easier to control prices.
In addition, according to Oke, the sale of bulk cooking oil is also related to consumer protection. In this case, the consumer has the right to information about the product so that information about this product can be obtained when the product is packaged.
Meanwhile, sales of bulk cooking oil did not include this information. In fact, the information must be conveyed to consumers.
“Because we know that in the packaging there is an expiration date, there are ingredients, what are the ingredients, so that people understand more about the product they are going to buy,” he said.
