Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Some women in China do not want to have more than one child. The reasons range from the high cost of raising children to the decision to be single. This is contrary to government policy which recommends every couple to have three children.
One of the industrial workers in downtown Changsha, Li admitted that he did not have enough money to raise a child, even for one.
“I can’t have any more will. Raising one child is like putting your money in a paper shredder. There’s no way I could have another,” Li told Radio Free Asia this week.
Similarly, one of the women whose marriage was only three years old, Qiu Xiojia, also experienced the same thing.
“We’ve bought a house now, and the monthly mortgage payment is higher than my monthly salary. So where does the money for the kids come from?” Qiu said.
Qiu then continued, “I can’t even afford one child, let alone three.”
In another big city, Chongqing, a millennial woman named Ma Jing and her husband have no plans to have children, because they still depend on their parents for a living.
“I live on a salary, and still rely heavily on my parents. The property I live in belongs to them, I drive my mother’s car, and I still can’t save any money,” joked Ma Jing.
One of the women in Shanghai, Li Dan, said she could afford to have children, but she chose not to have children.
“The main reason for me, an old woman of childbearing age, has nothing to do with money. The main reason is because I am a single woman,” said Li Dan.
Raising children in China costs a lot. Parents have to desperately even to pay for the education of one child. Public schools are increasingly demanding nominal payments of various kinds, as well as payments for meals and extracurricular activities.
