Reasons Behind High Rice Prices and Efforts to Mitigate in Jakarta

Jakarta

The price of medium and premium rice has not fallen to date. The National Food Agency has again revealed the reason why rice prices are still high.

According to him, this is because the price of Harvested Dry Grain (GKP) is also high. This was caused by decreased production, so mills did not have much GKP stock.

“Today, this means that rice millers cannot get GKP. Because the price of GKP is high, the price of rice is high,” said Head of the National Food Agency, Arief Prasetyo Adi, at the Cipinang Rice Main Market Warehouse, East Jakarta, Wednesday (4/10/ 2023).

In the future, Arief predicts that the harvest period will also be delayed, so that production will also decrease until the end of the year. However, the government is making every effort to prevent rice prices from rising sharply.

“We only started planting in December, because the BMKG said there would only be water available in December, so the harvest was a bit delayed,” he said.

Currently, market operations with Stabilization of Food Supply and Prices (SPHP) rice, distribution of food aid, and the cheap food movement continue to be carried out by the government. This was done to intervene in the price of rice on the market.

However, these efforts did not immediately reduce rice prices. Arief said that currently at least the price of rice has not soared high. This means it is still being held, even though it is still high.

“Imagine if there were no market operations, no food aid, nothing at all, but today’s rice price is stuck,” he said.
