It was starting to get weird and suspicious. Realme has just announced a new smartphone, the Realme GT Neo 5, which supports fast charging up to 240W. According to GSMArenaThis makes it the fastest smartphone in terms of charging speed on the market, faster than the 210W offered by the Redmi 12 Discovery Edition, and almost 100W faster than the 150W charging offered by OnePlus devices such as the 10T.
realme announces that the GT Neo 5’s 4,600mAh battery can be charged to 100 percent in nine and a half minutes thanks to its 240W fast charging. That’s blazing fast, but it’s also basically the same as what Redmi was claiming to achieve with 210W fast charging in last year’s Note 12 Discovery edition – although it has a slightly smaller 4,300mAh battery – back to our phone of the day, if you want a partial charge. The new Realme phone can reach 20 percent in just 80 seconds, and 50 percent in four minutes.
Here is a stage demonstration of Realme GT Neo 5 fast charging:
Realme is owned by BBK Electronics, the same company that owns Oppo and OnePlus. Oppo already showed a 240W fast charging solution at Mobile World Congress 2022, which this new Realme phone is supposed to use. 240W fast charging has not yet appeared in an Oppo or OnePlus phone.
The Realme GT Neo 5 has only been announced for the Chinese market for now, where it will already be sold in different shipment variants. The 240-watt version is, as you might expect, the most expensive. Pricing starts at 3,199 yuan (about $472) for 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. There’s also a version with “slower” 150W charging, although interestingly it has a slightly larger 5,000mAh battery. The 150W model starts at 2,599 yuan (about $383) with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
There’s no word yet on international availability and pricing, but with the Mobile World Congress happening in just a couple of weeks in Barcelona, we wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more in that time.
