Realme 8 5G Review: The perfect phone for the average user

The realme company appeared on the Czech market like a bolt from the blue and now its phones belong among the best-selling TOP 4 in the Czech Republic. There is, of course, a reason for this. Very often it offers products with an excellent price-performance ratio so it’s no wonder Android users are peeking at them. It all started with the successful Realme 6 series to make it look even better in a year realme 7which we have reviewed for you. The phones had some flies, but we evaluated them in a more positive spirit. Phones are now coming to the market realme 8 5G, realme 8 a realme 8 Pro and we will talk about the first one in this review.

Package contents

As always, let’s start with the contents of the realme 8 5G phone package. The mobile phone is coming in a bit today iconic yellow present box after its opening, several things await us. In addition to the phone itself, there is of course SIM card eject clip, 18 W charging adapter and USB-A / USB-C cable. It will also please the presence of a transparent silicone case, which the realme supplied in some of its previous models. The absence of headphones is (not only) a standard in this price category, so we can’t even consider it a big mistake.

Processing and appearance of the phone

At first glance, the realme 8 5G from his two siblings 8 and 8 Pro do not differ much. But the truth is that if you look at the phone in more detail, the changes are blessed here. The back side is again made of glossy plasticwhich is not very practical and easily captures dust and fingerprints. A little surprisingly, there is no inscription here “DARE TO LEAP”, which was rather criticized by the public for other models, but we personally do not mind and nicely reveals the brand identity.

The camera module also deserves attention. While there are four cameras in realme 8 and realme 8 Pro, there are only three (although this may not look like it). In the fourth “Lens” it is only AI (artificial intelligence) brand and honestly we don’t really understand this step. But it doesn’t make much sense to dissect it. Besides, though we have nothing to complain about the design of realme 8 5G.

The company boasts that it is one of the thinnest phones with support 5G network, in which they are right. The weight of the phone then makes it pleasant 185 grams and holds well in the hand even without a case. The power button with the fingerprint reader is placed perfectly, which unfortunately cannot be said about many other phones to this day. The presence of a USB-C port, audio jack or speaker on the bottom of the phone is a matter of course. He is rather below average and in addition to lower maximum volume, it also freezes worse bass performance. The absence of water resistance will also freeze (even when taking photos we were a little scared).

Display realme 8 5G

The display is a relatively large topic in realme 8 5G. While for realme 8 and 8 Pro the company decided to use AMOLED display, while this model got an IPS LCD panel. It has a 6.5 ″ diagonal, Full HD + resolution and a refresh rate of 90 Hz. So he got a worse panel, but a better refresh rate, which has the overall experience of the phone huge influence. The panel itself is then better than the previous generation – realme 7 5G. It has better color rendering, slightly higher maximum brightness (480 vs. 600 nits) and relatively good viewing angles.

  • 6,5″ IPS LCD panel
  • Full HD + resolution
  • 90 Hz refresh rate
  • maximum brightness 600 rivets

Unlike other phones in this category, the presence of the LCD panel instead of the AMOLED display did not bother us so much. We received at least a benefit in the form of a higher refresh rate compared to the standard model. The refresh rate itself has several modes. By default, you will have it set to automatic, which is a mode that recognizes when and where to send a higher frequency and where, on the contrary, a lower frequency is enough, which should have a positive effect on battery life. You can also set it manually to 90 or 60 Hz. We therefore evaluate the display rather positively.

Realme 8 5G hardware

Let’s say something about the realme 8 5G performance. One of the most affordable (cheapest) chipsets with a 5G modem is ticking under the hood – MediaTek Dimensity 700 along with 8 GB of RAM. The storage then has a total capacity of 128 GB. In foreign reviews, the phone catches up quite a bit about the chipset used, and we really don’t really understand the reason. Yes, it is definitely not the most powerful phone in this price category, but if you do not follow the numbers, you can stay completely calm. And we finally prepared them for you.

  • MediaTek Dimensity 700 with support for 5G networks
  • 8 GB of RAM
  • 128 GB storage

In the Geekbench benchmark, Realme 8 5G took home in single-core power 533 points, in multi-core power 1653 points. That means the phone is about something more powerful than, for example, Pixel 4a, who scored 531 and 1536 points in the same test. The phone in combination with the new realme UI 2.0 system works absolutely great, responds immediately and we did not have any problems with loading applications or more advanced multi-skating, when we actively switched between several applications.

In short, if you are not looking for a gaming phone (so you will probably look the same in a different price range), the hardware of the new realme 8 5G works perfectly and we have no reservations about it. And if you want to play? Call of Duty: The mobile we tested on the phone runs on medium details around 55 – 70 FPS, which is a decent value and can be played with complete peace of mind. We were surprised that even after half an hour of playing, the phone remained basically cool, as it was in normal use. The cooling obviously has the phone handled well.

Realme UI 2.0

The Realme UI superstructure belongs together with OxygenOS, for example of the cleanest superstructures ever. You will get some bloatware the first time you run it, but fortunately it can be easily deleted. The second generation, then Realme UI 2.0 but it is still much better than its predecessor. In addition, you can count on all the news typical for Android 11, as it is on this system that the superstructure is built.
