Realize the Implications of Diabetes from Head, Intimate Organs, to Feet

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – International Diabetes The Federation or IDF estimates that there are at least 463 million people aged 20 to 79 years in the world who suffer from diabetes in 2019. And Indonesia ranks seventh with 10.7 million people with diabetes.

Internal Medicine Specialist from Premier Bintaro Hospital, Rendy Suherman said, diabetes is divided into three, namely type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. “In principle, diabetes mellitus occurs due to interference from the pancreas that produces insulin,” said Rendy at the virtual launch of Avrist Tematis on Wednesday, December 15, 2021.

Type 1 diabetes is hereditary and is an autoimmune disease. Type 1 diabetes is usually detected since childhood. While type 2 diabetes occurs in adulthood and the cause is an unhealthy lifestyle. While gestational diabetes occurs in pregnant women. This condition is caused by insulin which is less sensitive to fluctuations in blood sugar during pregnancy.

In the case of type 2 diabetes, according to Rendy, basically the body does not produce insulin in sufficient quantities to control glucose levels in the blood to remain within normal limits. It can also be that the body produces enough insulin, but the body’s cells do not use it properly or insulin resistance occurs.

Some of the conditions that trigger type 2 diabetes mellitus are obesity, high distribution of belly fat, an inactive lifestyle or infrequent exercise, a history of certain diseases, being over 45 years old but it is possible that it can occur before that age. Type 2 diabetes mellitus also generally occurs with prediabetes or blood sugar levels higher than normal, but has not been classified as diabetes, history of diabetes during pregnancy, and women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome include irregular periods, excess hair growth, and obesity.

Head of Partnership Distribution, PT. Avrist Assurance, Vinia Lestianti Erwin said, many do not realize that diabetes has emergency consequences. “Various chronic diseases caused by diabetes have an impact on the cost of treatment and care which is not easy and not cheap at all,” he said.

Rendy Suherman conveyed the implications of diabetes from head to toe. “Diabetes can trigger metabolic disorders and have an impact on the body’s organs,” he said. If it attacks the brain, it can trigger stroke; attack the heart, it can lead to heart disease; attacks the kidneys, can lead to kidney failure; attack blood vessels, it can trigger hypertension; impact on intimate organs, can cause erectile dysfunction; and attacks the legs, can be in the form of wounds that do not heal until it ends in amputation.

Some of the classic characteristics of type 2 diabetes include drinking a lot because you often feel thirsty, overeating because you are often hungry, and urinating frequently. “Many who are not aware of this classic complaint then take it for granted,” he said. “I only found out after seeing the doctor and it was too late.”

The symptoms of complications from diabetes are weight loss, often feel tingling or cramping, wounds that don’t heal, erectile dysfunction, and others. To prevent diabetes, Rendy invites people to adopt a healthy lifestyle by eating balanced nutritious foods, diligently sport, get enough rest, and check your health condition regularly.
