Realize! Eating at Restaurants is at Risk of Contracting Covid-19 Than Taking the Bus

In the study, researchers analyzed information from 314 adults who tested for Covid-19 at one of 11 health care facilities across the US. All of the participants had experienced some of the symptoms for which they were tested.

About half of those test takers received a positive test. Meanwhile, the other half received a negative test. Participants were interviewed about the activities they did for 14 days before their symptoms were detected. They were asked if going to the store, gym, office, salon, bar or coffee shop, restaurant, attending religious services, or using public transportation.

Eat Frequently at Restaurants

Overall, people who tested positive for Covid-19 reported twice as much as having eaten at a restaurant in the 14 days before falling ill than people who tested negative. And when the researchers excluded people known to have had contact with Covid-19, they found that those who tested positive ate almost three times as much at restaurants. Nearly four times as many going to a bar or coffee and shopping as those who tested negative.

No other activity from the survey was associated with an increased risk of Covid-19. The authors note that one limitation of their study is that it does not differentiate between eating indoors and outdoors.

“Exposure and activities where wearing masks and social distancing is difficult, including going to locations that offer on-site eating and drinking, may be important risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection,” the authors concluded. Indonesian Business Information Network (JIBI) from livescience.

The CDC recommends ways to reduce the risk of contracting Covid-19 while eating at restaurants, including wearing a mask as much as possible when not eating and maintaining a distance of 1.8 meters from people who do not live together; sit outside if possible, and call ahead of time to ask if all staff at the restaurant wear masks while working.
