Jakarta –
Ambition Mark Zuckerberg working metaverse must be redeemed at a very high cost, which has now exceeded USD 30 billion or around Rp. 440 trillion.
In Q1 2023, Meta’s financial condition did improve, its sales increased by 3% and its total revenue exceeded analyst estimates, reaching USD 28.65 billion. But the condition of Reality Labs, the division that manages the metaverse, is very different.
The division again recorded a loss, reaching USD 3.99 billion. Combined with losses during 2022 which reached USD 14 billion and losses in previous years, Reality Labs lost USD 30 billion since Q4 2020. The division’s largest quarterly loss occurred in Q4 2022 which reached 4.3 billion.
Zuck’s ambition to work on the metaverse through Reality Labs has taken its toll. Namely the layoffs of 21 thousand employees, quoted detikINET from Techspot, Friday (28/4/2023).
Metaverse enthusiasts, which were already low from the start, are becoming even lower with the slumping global economic conditions. Shipments of virtual reality headsets were among the markers, which fell by more than 12% year-on-year in 2022.
With the unfavorable economic conditions, VR headsets with high prices are clearly not a priority. But the cause is not only that, but a topic that has recently been very popular, namely AI.
The success of OpenAI via ChatGPT has made many companies immediately try to implement AI chatbots such as ChatGPT in their services, including Meta.
Meta recently started getting serious about artificial intelligence projects. They announced products in February focused on generative AI, which are machine learning techniques that enable computers to generate text, draw, and create other media that mimic human creation.
According to Meta’s Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth, Meta is likely to launch several commercial applications using AI this year to help the ad business drive company profits. For example, AI can be used to create ads by producing multiple images that work for different audiences rather than relying on a single image ad campaign.
