Parts of the 275 Real branches either continue, close, are converted or resold to Edeka, Kaufland, Globus and Co. We can only speculate about the exact number of branches. What is certain is that at least every time Edeka, Kaufland and Co. take over, the competition authorities have to check the case separately. This could also lead to concerns or even bans, which could slow down the process.
SCP has at least announced that it will continue with a core of markets. Real takes over the business itself, with an estimated 50 branches. The stores oversee ex-managers of Lidl and Rewe.
Ten Real branches are to be finally closed again in 2020. SCP also wants to convert some locations so that smaller shopping arcades (mini-malls) are created. Markets that need smaller sales areas could then also move in there. These include Aldi, Lidl or Rewe. Gyms, drugstores or fashion chains could also fit into such mini-malls.
