Real Madrid took full advantage of FC Barcelona’s loss of points at Celta Vigo on Saturday. It itself booked a victory without shine on the field of red lantern Espanyol, but that was enough to take the lead in La Liga alone. It now has two points more than Barça, with six more days ahead.
As a last resort Espanyol was clearly the underdog against Real and the Catalans clearly opted for the defensive approach. This ensured that the Royal did dominate, but that there was little spectacle to be seen. Only in the closing minute of the first half did we see a brilliant flash. Benzema separated Casemiro with a beautiful heel and the Brazilian honored the handsome assist with a goal.
It immediately turned out to be the lone goal of the game, as after the break no more goals were scored. A fairly invisible Eden Hazard was replaced shortly after the hour by Vinicius Junior. Thibaut Courtois was of course just under the bar the entire game.
