It’s not often these days that a major construction project is completed on time. The work should take two years, those responsible at Real Mallorca said at the start of the renovation work at the Son Moix stadium at the beginning of 2022. Now, two years later, the excavators are actually moving away. After the away game on Wednesday (January 3) against Real Madrid, the Mallorcans will officially inaugurate their new home stadium against Celta de Vigo on January 13th. Of a “dead, prison-like structure” They have moved to a “modern, open” space, says CFO Alfonso Díaz in an interview with the “Diario de Mallorca”.
Who paid for the renovation?
The renovation cost 24 million euros, the main aim of which was to… Remove athletics track around the field. Some of the money came from the league’s rights sale to the CVC fund. “It’s like a mortgage that we have to pay back,” said Díaz. The US owners have now invested around 100 million euros in the first division club.
What’s still missing now
The size of the stadium, with 23,142 seats, remained unchanged. But the surrounding area becomes much larger. This fine work still needs to be done. One is planned new sports bar, a gym, a rehabilitation clinic, a beauty salon and a co-working space. All of this should be integrated into the complex.
We can only hope that Real Mallorca can do justice to the effort in terms of sport. The team is currently five points ahead of Vigo, who are currently in the first relegation place in the table.
