Real confirms in a press release on Wednesday that the club has bought the license from Club Deportivo Tacón, a women’s team from Madrid. Rumors about the takeover have been going on for some time.
The ‘Royal’ often received criticism in recent years because it was the only Spanish top club without a women’s team. FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Valencia have been active for years in the Primera División Femenina, which was discontinued last season due to the corona virus. Barcelona, the team of Lieke Martens, was declared champion in May. In the previous four years, Atlético captured the title.
Real emphasizes in the press release that the women’s team is a permanent project. A youth department for women is therefore also being started. “It’s a great new challenge for our club,” Real writes. “We want to promote women’s football and contribute to the growth of the sport.”
