Real Madrid lived up to expectations at the start of the 2024/2025 season and won the European Super Cup this afternoon, after beating Atalanta, the reigning Europa League champions, 2-0 in Poland. Federico Valverde and Kylian Mbappé scored the goals for Carlo Ancelotti’s team, which won its sixth Super Cup to become the team that has won it the most times.
The match was more difficult than expected for Real Madrid, who for almost 60 minutes of play were unable to show the superiority that was expected. In fact, until Valverde’s goal, Atalanta had the best goal-scoring opportunities.
In the first half, with a cross that Militao almost put in against the goal and another with a shot from medium distance by Ederson. The only chance of the first half for the Merengue was at the feet of Rodrygo, who shot badly and ended up hitting the crossbar. Atalanta tried to react, but in the 22nd minute Madrid recovered the ball high again and after a play in which all four attacking players participated – Rodrygo, Vinicius, Bellingham and Mbappé – the Englishman ended up assisting Kylian for his first goal in a Real shirt.

From there, the rest of the match was simply a formality. Atalanta tried to get back into the game with the introduction of Mateo Retegui with more offensive weight, but they did not have a situation as clear as those they had with the game tied 0-0, and Madrid did not take advantage of any of the opportunities to finish off a match that already had an owner. Thus began the Mbappé Era at Real Madrid, which once again appears as the main candidate for the Champions League in this new season.
