Real Madrid played an overdue league match against Elche today after their FIFA Club World Cup appearance. Carlo Ancelotti’s team did not give the Primera División red light a chance and shortened the distance to Barcelona.
The match was over by the time the break was over. Marco Asensio opened the scoring in the eighth minute, moving easily between the defenders of Elche and putting the ball in the net with a precise shot. Two more goals came from penalties. First, after half an hour, Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea dictated a penalty kick from Enzo Roco’s hand, and at the very end of the first half, he decided that Rodrygo was fouled in the “sixteen”, although it can be doubted. However, VAR did not intervene. Both penalties were converted by Karim Benzema. The Frenchman overtook Raúl and is now the second highest goalscorer in Real’s history in LaLiga.
In the second half, Luka Modrić increased the score, giving no chance to Edgar Badia. No more goals were scored, but Real had a gigantic advantage and Elche failed to score even a single shot on target. Anyway The whites they won and shortened the gap to Barcelona to eight points. On Saturday, Ancelotti’s team face Osasuna away and it should be a much tougher opponent than today’s, especially with Liverpool next week on the horizon. An additional difficulty may be the fact that Jagoba Arrasate’s team ranks sixth in LaLiga in terms of the number of points won at home.
