The hero of Real Madrid’s progress to the Champions League final was the two-goal striker Joselu.
In the final of the most prestigious club competition in the world, Real Madrid will meet Borussia Dortmund on June 1 at Wembley Stadium in London.
Both sides had good chances in the first half. The hosts had a big man in the 13th minute, unable to finish off the open goal after Vinicius Junior’s shot hit the post. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer neutralized the goal and Andrij Lunin was also active on the other side. The hosts lost the injured Sergo Gnabry, who was replaced by Alphonso Davies, half an hour into the game.
It was the 23-year-old defender who opened the scoring in the 68th minute. He received Harry Kane’s right cross on the left wing, dealt with Antonio Rüdiger and beat Lunin with a shot to the far post. For the Canadians, this was the first accurate hit in the LM.
Offensive activity from the hosts came after a lot of pressure from Real, in which Neuer kept Bayern on several occasions. The home team equalized minutes later, but referee Szymon Marciniak, after seeing the video, refused to disallow the goal due to a foul on Joshua Kimmich.
The real equalizer came after further pressure and a mistake by Neuer, who missed Vinicus’ shot outside the penalty area and was immediately beaten by Joselu in the 88th minute. The substitute, sent on to the pitch by home coach Carlo Ancelotti in the 81st minute, scored the winning goal three minutes later, which was investigated for offside by VAR, but in the end over there it was valid. The end of extra time sparked controversy when referee Szymon Marciniak did not allow the visitors to complete the action due to offside coverage.
The final is scheduled for June 1 at Wembley Stadium, Borussia’s first in this competition since 2013. In the semi-finals, they got past Paris Saint-Germain, who they beat -again 1:0.
