Brazilian winger Rodrygo (22) will be with the prestigious Spanish club Real Madrid until 2028.
Real Madrid announced on the 3rd (Korean time), “We have signed a contract extension with Rodrygo until June 2028.” Rodrygo, who played for Santos in Brazil and joined Real Madrid in 2019, played an active role as a key striker last season, scoring 19 goals.
According to major foreign media such as the BBC, Real Madrid set Rodrygo’s buyout amount at 1 billion euros (about 1.4 trillion won). A buyout refers to the minimum transfer fee that one team must pay when taking a player from another team who still has time left on his contract. In other words, if a certain club wants to sign Rodrygo before June 2028, it must pay at least 1 billion euros to Real Madrid. Considering that the 220 million euros (approximately 300 billion won) that Neymar (31, Brazil) recorded when he changed his uniform from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 is the highest transfer fee of all time, another team would pay 1 billion euros. The possibility of taking Rodrygo is extremely low. 1 billion euros can be seen as a symbolic amount that shows that Real Madrid values Rodrygo so highly and that it cannot give him away to another team.
Spain’s two biggest clubs, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, have many players who belong to the ‘1 billion euro club’. Last June, Real signed a contract with England midfielder Jude Bellingham (20) until June 2029 and set a buyout of 1 billion euros. They also signed extension contracts with Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde (25), who played against Korea at the last Qatar World Cup, and Brazilian superstar Vinicius (23), inserting a 1 billion euro buyout clause.
Barcelona reportedly signed an extension contract with 16-year-old prospect Lamine Yamal (Spain), who holds the record for the youngest goal in La Liga, with a buyout clause of 1 billion euros last month. The buyout for midfielder Pedri (21, Spain), who signed a contract to play for Barcelona for five more years in 2021, is also 1 billion euros.
