Real previously succeeded in the fight for the European Super Cup in 2002, 2014, 2016, 2017, and with five triumphs, they equaled Barcelona and AC Milan at the top of the historical table. In its premier participation, Frankfurt did not take the chance to become the 25th club on the list of winners.

Last year, Chelsea won this trophy after a shootout with Villarreal. Spanish clubs are the most successful in Europe in the statistics of winners so far – they have won the Super Cup 16 times (Barcelona and Real Madrid 5 each, Atletico Madrid 3, Valencia 2, Sevilla 1).

Real’s coach fielded the same starting eleven that played in the Champions League final in Paris in May, Frankfurt started from the start without Götze. After a cautious start, Frankfurt was the first to get a big chance – in the 14th minute, Kamada found himself behind the opponent’s defense after a penetrating pass, but he did not surprise Courtois with a cross shot. Just three minutes later, Real was very close to a goal on the other side, when Vinicius Junior completed the combination into an empty net, but goalkeeper Trapp was replaced in front of the line by defender Tut at the last moment. In the middle of the first half, Courtois had to intervene again, this time with Knauff’s attempt. Eintracht overcrowded the middle of the field and, thanks to the attentive defense, did not allow the favorite to score opportunities. This was true until the 37th minute, when first Trapp had to push Vinicius Junior’s cross-ground attempt out of the goal, and after a subsequent corner and Casemiro’s tap from the goal line, he comfortably opened the open goal for Alaba – 1:0. Benzema could have increased his team’s lead before the break, but he missed the goal from twelve meters.

Ten minutes after the change of sides, the Frankfurt goalkeeper Trapp was on duty again, who, even with luck, neutralized Vinicius Junior’s attempt from a dangerous position. Real controlled the development, Frankfurt, on the other hand, tried to revive the game with a double substitution after less than an hour of the game, after which Götze came on the field instead of captain Rode. A moment later, however, the German team almost conceded, but after Casemiro’s shot from outside the penalty area, he was saved from a goal by the crossbar of Trapp’s goal. In the 64th minute, Real’s defense left too much space for Knauff, who broke into the box and checked the attention of Courtois. However, it immediately struck on the other side – Vinicius Junior received a long pass on the left wing, found Benzema in the penalty area with a pass and he made it 2:0 with a first shot into the center of the goal. In the rest of the duel, Frankfurt still tried to dramatize the ending with more significant activity, but never once found a recipe to overcome the opponent’s defense.
