Madrid. A disappointing Real Madrid could only draw 1-1 in their visit to Las Palmas and, after just three LaLiga games, are already four points behind their great rivals, Barcelona.
Brazilian Vinicius equalised from the penalty spot (69) after Alberto Moleiro’s opening goal for the Canaries (5).
After the draw in the first round in Mallorca, Real Madrid has 5 points, compared to 9 for Barcelona, who have achieved a perfect record.
Next weekend, the Blaugrana team will host Valladolid, while Real Madrid will play at home against Betis.
The third title contender, Atlético de Madrid (5 points), will have a difficult trip to San Mamés to play Athletic, with the need to score points to stay on top of the leader.
Following the hard-fought win over Valladolid last weekend, Carlo Ancelotti made four changes to the starting eleven, bringing on Brahim and Luka Modric in particular in midfield in the hope of improving their play and combining better with the forwards.
But just five minutes into the game, Alberto Moleiro surprised the white defence and beat Thibaut Courtois to open the scoring in favour of the Canaries.
Real Madrid did not perform well in the first half and only had a couple of chances to score, with long-range shots from Valverde and Rüdiger.
Mbappé still hasn’t scored
“The game is slow, there is no movement, the ball reaches the forwards when the opposing team is closed, we struggle to find space between the lines… The problem is quite clear, we have to find a solution,” said Ancelotti after the match.
The Italian coach admitted that he has to find a solution quickly: “I have to be clearer about the strategy on the pitch to give clarity to the players. It’s costing us more than we thought, but we have to work hard and focus well. These three games have shown me many things that are not going well.”
Real Madrid’s big signing this season, Kyliam Mbappé, has once again shown that he lacks experience with his teammates and despite trying on several occasions, he still hasn’t trained in LaLiga as a goalscorer.
After Sandro missed what could have been the final goal (55), Vinicius tied the score for the Madrid team from the penalty spot, in a foul called for a handball by a defender (69).
In the final push, Ancelotti brought on the young Brazilian Endrick, who came close to scoring (86) straight after coming on, but his strike was poor and Real Madrid had to settle for a point… and thank goodness, as two minutes later the home team scored the second goal, which was disallowed for offside.
Girona thrashes
Earlier, Girona had secured their first win of the season after beating Osasuna 4-0.
Just after learning the result of the Champions League draw, a tournament in which it will participate for the first time in its history and in which it will play against prestigious rivals such as Liverpool, Arsenal, Paris SG and Milan, the Catalan team once again recalled last season’s performance with a very complete match and great effectiveness in front of the opposing goal.
Bryan Gil (34), Ukrainian Viktor Tsygankov (53), Abel Ruiz (56) and veteran Uruguayan striker Cristhian Stuani (90) were the authors of the goals for the red-and-white team, which with the victory rises to 7th place in the standings, with 4 points.
