Real Madrid enjoy playing in the Champions League and provide so much drama in this competition that it’s hard to understand their desire to break away and form a Super League. Tuesday night at Anfield was yet another classic match involving Los Blancos in a tournament they have become synonymous with.
The game was a thriller from start to finish. Liverpool got off to a flyer, going 2-0 up, but Real Madrid rallied and eventually blew them away, scoring five without reply.
The truth is that this Real Madrid team simply don’t know when they’re beaten in the Champions League. Tonight was another test of their character and they have proven themselves once again.
Another night for the history books
Madrid signed another of their great European nights at Anfield. He began shaken in a huge start for Liverpool and ended up conquering one of the great temples of football with an exhibition in the second half. The great match of Vinicius, Valverde, Modric and Benzema was to frame. The best possible tribute to Amancio.
Benzema’s second like a videogame
Benzema’s second goal would be hard to replicate even on a videogame. The French striker sat Alisson down and found the net despite a flurry of defenders trying to block his way.
Another masterclass from Modric
Luka Modric continues to defy time and prove he still belongs at the very top. He was one of the few who remained composed when Liverpool stormed into an early lead and played a big role in the comeback. He deserves a new contract and the club should put it in front of him as soon as possible.
Better with Nacho
With Alaba off injured and Liverpool ahead, things were looking bad for Madrid, but Nacho, out of position at left back, performed nobly and did his best to all but nullify the threat from Mo Salah who began the game so strongly. After that showing, he could even make the position his own.
Militao on another level
Another big game from Eder Militao who continues to prove himself at this level and assert himself as a leader in the post-Sergio Ramos era. He took his goal brilliantly and was another who remained calm in a nervy opening period.
