Real Madrid awards a party weekend in Barcelona and ends in Barça

Real Madrid has taken a big step towards the first Primera División title since 2017. One day after FC Barcelona stumbled surprisingly over Celta de Vigo, De Koninklijke ended up against two points, especially against FC Espanyol – fellow townsman of FC Barcelona.

Casemiro scored the only goal of the evening at half time, after a beautiful assist with the heel of Karim Benzema. Only in the opening phase did the list captain seem to have a hard time. Sergi Darder and Wu Lei showed up near Thibaut Courtois, but couldn’t crown the debut of Francisco Rufete – the fourth (!) Espanyol coach of the season. In the course of the first half, Real Madrid took control and in injury time it was Benzema who initiated the 0-1 of Casemiro with a brilliant inspiration.

This hit turned out to be decisive. The margin was tight, but was eventually won over The Royal. Espanyol’s last desperate attempt via substitute Jonathan Calleri also yielded nothing.

Real Madrid is now two points above FC Barcelona and has an advantage in terms of mutual result. Zinedine Zidane’s team still has six games to stay ahead of the arch rival, but has a difficult diptych ahead: Real Madrid receives Getafe at home on Thursday, and the visit to Athletic Bilbao awaits on Sunday afternoon.
