In 2015, Warsaw hosted the first ever final of the European Football Association (UEFA) competition in Poland. At that time, Sevilla FC and the Ukrainian FK Dnipro played for the Europa League trophy. The Spanish team won 3:2, with Grzegorz Krychowiak scoring one of the winning goals.
The next final in Poland had to wait six years. In 2021, Gdańsk hosted the decisive match of the Europa League. Villarreal CF and Manchester United played then, and the players of both teams spent much more time on the pitch. After 90 and 120 minutes, there was a 1-1 draw, and then an unusual penalty shootout took place, in which the “Yellow Submarine” won 11-10. In the last series, Argentine Geronimo Rulli took his penalty, who a moment later saved the shot of the second goalkeeper – Spaniard David de Gea. It was Villarreal’s greatest success in its history.
Real Madrid’s match against Atalanta for the European Super Cup, scheduled for Wednesday, is a clash between the winners of the Champions League and Europa League. In the UEFA Champions League final, Real Madrid defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0. Atalanta Bergamo triumphed in the UEFA Europa League, defeating Bayer Leverkusen 3-0.
Although the fight for the Super Cup is sometimes treated with reserve by big clubs and their fans, there is no doubt that starting the season with a trophy will have a positive effect on self-confidence. The match for the 2024 European Super Cup will be played at the National Stadium in Warsaw.
It is already known that the next final will also be held in Poland. In 2025, the clash for the Conference League trophy will take place in Wrocław.
