Real Madrid Ascends to Top of Spanish Football League with 4-1 Victory – Girona Could Regain Lead

Real Madrid provisionally ascended to the lead, with 42 points, but Girona hosts Alavés on Monday and could regain its position as isolated leader in case of victory.

Real Madrid defeated Villarreal today, 4-1, in the 17th round of the Spanish Football League, and provisionally took the lead, but Girona hosts Alavés on Monday and can regain first place.

The Merengues had no difficulty in dominating the game and materializing that supremacy with four goals, two in the first half, in the 25th and 37th minutes, by Englishman Jude Bellingham and Brazilian Rodrygo, respectively.

Villarreal still managed to reduce it to 2-1 in the 54th minute, through midfielder José Luís Morales, but 10 minutes later, in the 64th minute, Brahim Diaz practically resolved the issue with the third goal, with Croatian international Luka Modric fixing the final result at 68.

With today’s three points, Real Madrid have provisionally risen to the lead, with 42 points, but Girona will host Alavés on Monday and could regain their position as isolated leaders in case of victory.

Of the other games played today on the 17th round, the highlight was the draw between Real Sociedad and Betis, in the Basque Country, with striker André Silva deserving of a starting role in the home team, while Rui Silva was the ‘owner’ in goal for the Andalusian team, playing the full 90 minutes.

His compatriot William Carvalho was released by the Sevillian coach at 73, replacing midfielder Sergi Altimira.

In the remaining two games, Almeria, with Portuguese goalkeeper Luís Maximiano in goal, received and drew goalless with Mallorca, with Portuguese midfielder Samu Costa in the ‘eleven’, while Las Palmas and Cadiz also did not go further of a draw, but a goal.
