Champions of La Liga 2022/2023 bring new history. It was the first time that Spain had had only one representative since the round of 16 format moved to the knockout stage.
The fifth day of the Champions League is over. So far 12 have made sure to advance to the round of 16, but only by that number real Madrid the only representative of Spain who can step forward and fight to lock the Group F winner status.
Sevilla were eliminated despite managing to beat Copenhagen 3-0 because in several points Manchester City vs Borussia Dortmund finished 0-0. Sevilla can only take third place in Group G because they have currently only collected five points, which means moving to the Europa League.
Barcelona have also been thrown from the Champions League to the Europa League. The team formed by Xavi Henandez secured third place in Group C after Inter beat Viktoria Plzen.
After the Inter match, Barcelona lost 0-3 to Bayern Munich. The Blaugrana, on the other hand, cannot advance yet if they manage to beat Die Roten.
Atletico Madrid became a Spanish side that tragically failed after a 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen. Los Colchoneros actually had a chance to win even though the referee whistled the final whistle.
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) checks the potential handball penalties of Leverkusen players and 12 kicks are awarded! Atlético gets a penalty.
But unfortunate for them, Yannick Carrasco’s execution was read by Lukas Hradecky and Saul Niguez’s attempt to snatch the rebound just hit the crossbar, with a third shot by an Atletico player obliterated in front of the goal line.
This is a new story in the Champions League since the round of 16 was first used by knockout in 2003/2004. Spain has only one representative in the round of 16, namely Real Madrid.
