Lipton tea is probably the best known brand of the drink worldwide. The house of the head of the company could not fall short of the grandeur of the company he led.
Now the waterfront home on the Massachusetts coast known as the “Tea House on the Neck,” formerly owned by the head of the Lipton Tea Company, has hit the market for $6.795 million.
For 110 years, from its construction in 1880 until 1990, the Marblehead estate was owned by the same family—that of Gardner Barker, the company’s former president.
Gardner Barker, who was born in Brooklyn, Mass., in 1913, worked for Lipton from 1956 until his retirement in 1978, according to his obituary. He died in 1990 at the age of 77, at which point the then-larger estate was broken up and sold.
On the estate, this house “was something of a guest house,” which is hard to believe considering how grand it is, Realtor Liz Walters of Coldwell Banker Realty – Marblehead told Barron’s.
Full of history
There are many signs of Gardner Barker’s heritage throughout the historic residence, from the Lipton box paneling that still lines the basement walls to the small teahouse located at the edge of the property overlooking the ocean. The family had also imported an incredible number of trees from China. “He wanted to [το ακίνητο] to be private and green and have a lot of depth in landscaping and views,” Walters said.
The 600-square-meter house has “a lot of history and a lot of those elements have been preserved,” Walters said. “No one wanted to break it up.” The home’s owners, according to Gardner Barker, “appreciated it for what it is, a luxury mansion, and saw no reason to do anything more with it.”
The seller paid $4.3 million for the property in 2014, according to PropertyShark records.
The home also features multiple living areas, a modern kitchen, a large office with original wood paneling, a gym, a wine cellar and five bedrooms.
The incredible view
But the real feature that makes it stand out is the view. “Everyone says the same thing, it really takes your breath away. You go up this huge road, you get to the top and all you see around every corner is water, that to me is the strongest selling point,” Walters said. “You can see everything, the whole ocean, the whole harbor behind you and the Marblehead Lighthouse.”
So strong is the attraction of the location, the buyer never saw the inside of the house before making an offer. “He walked a long way, sat in the teahouse and said ‘I’ll take it,'” Walters said.
