(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kwon Hye-jin = Last year, the transaction cliff due to the real estate market recession worsened, and about 16,000 real estate brokerage offices were found to have closed.
This is the highest number since 2019.
According to the Korea Real Estate Agents Association on the 23rd, there were 14,379 licensed real estate agent offices that closed last year and 1,438 licensed real estate agent offices that were closed. A total of 15,817 real estate brokerage offices were closed.

This means that 43 real estate brokerage offices completely closed down or temporarily suspended business every day.
During the same period, 12,223 stores were opened. There are 3,594 more businesses closed or closed than open.
Accordingly, the number of licensed real estate agent offices opened decreased from 117,583 in December 2022 to 115,063 in December of last year.
The number of closures and closures was the highest since 2019 (16,749).
13,860 places were closed in 2020, 12,569 in 2021, and 13,217 in 2022.
The downturn in the real estate market and the resulting decrease in transactions are considered to be the main reasons for the increase in the number of real estate agent closures and suspensions.
Looking at the Korea Real Estate Board’s housing sales transaction status, the number of sales, which was 1,015,171 in 2021, was halved to 508,790 in 2022.
Last year, from January to November, there were 517,378 transactions, which appears to be a slight increase from the previous year, but it is still low compared to 2020-2021, when the number of sales exceeded 1 million.
This decline in transactions will inevitably lead to a decline in the income of brokerage offices.
An official from the Certified Real Estate Agents Association said, “There are many licensed real estate agents who are having difficulty maintaining their offices due to poor sales,” and added, “There are members who choose to suspend business rather than close their businesses and pay monthly rent because it is difficult to receive key money.”
This official added, “Considering the interest rate trend, there are many predictions that it will be difficult to revive the buying trend for the time being, so this situation may continue for a while.”
