Hugo Broos (69) is back. Two years after his last job in football, he was announced as South Africa’s new national coach on Tuesday. The SAFA, the local football association, was able to beat Congo in particular.

Broos left in April 2019 as sports director at KV Oostende. His career seemed to be over, especially since he said he had promised his wife to quit. But then it started itching again. The former trainer of (among others) Club Brugge, Anderlecht and Racing Genk was open to a comeback and several African federations tried to convince him to choose them in recent weeks.
Broos was in the picture at Congo-Brazzaville and Togo and was especially a top candidate for Congo, where he was at the top of the wish list last week and with whom he was in extensive negotiations. Ultimately, however, South Africa turned out to have the best credentials.
