Mülheim. Education is our future. What children learn today will have a significant impact on our society in the coming decades. Children today must be prepared in the best possible way in order to cope with tomorrow’s problems. To lead your life independently – to become part of society and to stand up for it.
But what should children learn if politicians don’t stand up for their concerns? If only education is interesting, if economic gains can now be achieved through it?
This is exactly what is happening here in Mülheim. The city has to decide that the budget for the open all-day school (OGS) in Mülheim should be reduced by around 50%. This is accompanied by an intervention in the staff hours. Apart from the livelihoods of the educators, who are threatened with it, the quality in the Mülheimer OGS is severely restricted. The high standard of education that has been built up over the years. Networking with the primary school teachers – one of the biggest advantages compared to the previous daycare center. The multitude of educationally valuable offers. All of this will no longer be possible to this extent. The OGS will literally degenerate into pure retention time. Your right to education will be severely restricted during the OGS period. Hence my question again:
What should children learn if politicians don’t stand up for their concerns? If only education is interesting, if economic gains can now be achieved through it?
Many parents are already unable to register their children in the OGS because there is a lack of staff. Therefore, the legal entitlement to an OGS place should come from 2025. Similar to daycare centers. We should learn from this and expand the OGS at an early stage, provide enough staff and provide sufficient space.
But our Lord Mayor is asking for exactly the opposite. 2.5 million euros in savings. That is half of the previous budget. A reduction in the number of hours from just under 60 hours per group to 40 hours. That corresponds to only one full-time employee per group. Since two educators are necessary at peak times and the hours have to be split up, this job becomes very unattractive for specialist staff – especially since all the administrative tasks have to be accommodated with the hour quota.
Therefore, an investment in education is not to be upgraded with economic gains. Education is a long-term investment and without it our future is lost.
