In the Bizarre Confession section, a reader of NSMBL makes a confession. We’re just trying to figure life out and this doesn’t come without a struggle. Being a young adult? That is sometimes quite difficult. After all, we are all human and every person experiences different crazy and special things. In love with the wrong person? Embarrassing moment during a date? In Bizarre Confession you read stories that are sometimes recognizable, or not at all.

This week Rowen* (19) talks about her allergy.

Hi Rowen, what’s going on?

“Last year during Christmas I had a glass of wine for the first time. I’ve always been very good in that respect, I don’t like to party and don’t think it’s necessary to drink alcohol. Still, I tried it last year and I was immediately punished. I got terrible diarrhea, I got dizzy, palpitations and after an hour I also got a strange rash. All this quite quickly after consuming that one glass of wine, so it was striking. I felt really bad and at first I thought it was the food.

I then waited to call the doctor because it was of course Christmas and because I am always afraid that I am acting out. After a few days I went to check what was going on and my doctor immediately said that he thought it was an alcohol allergy.”

An intruder

“He then let me read this piece: ‘With an allergy to alcohol, your body reacts to the alcohol as if it were a dangerous invader. The immune system is activated and substances such as histamine are released,” from an Internet website. I saved it so that if people ask what exactly it is I can show it. No one believes that I am allergic, but it is true. Even a small amount of alcohol can cause your body to react very strongly. So I stick to my position: no alcohol for me.”
