Reactivation next week: Musk: ‘Amnesty’ for suspended Twitter accounts

First Donald Trump, now other previously blocked people should be able to return: Twitter boss Elon Musk has announced the general unblocking of blocked accounts.

Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk, has announced plans to reactivate frozen short message service accounts in the coming week. Earlier, he asked users to vote on whether there should be a “general amnesty” for banned accounts, as long as they don’t break the law or spread spam messages.

Most of the participating users were in favor of reactivation. “People have spoken. Amnesty starts next week,” Musk wrote in a tweet on Thursday evening.

Of the more than 3.1 million survey participants, 72.4% said Twitter should allow banned accounts, Musk wrote. According to the latest information, the service has more than 230 million daily active users.

Twitter polls are open to all users and can be used by fake accounts and bots.

Musk announced in late October that a council would be formed to address controversial content before Twitter accounts could be reactivated. Last week, the tech billionaire unblocked former US President Donald Trump’s account after a user survey.

Trump has been banned from Twitter since January 2021. On January 6, he expressed his sympathy for his supporters who stormed the US House of Representatives. The offending tweets from January 6 are missing from the unblocked profile. Denied claims about Trump’s presidential election allegedly stolen by Joe Biden continue to be accompanied by cautionary tales.

Musk bought Twitter for around $44 billion in late October. Since the takeover, the company has struggled with, among other things, the reluctance of large advertising clients. Advertising revenue has recently accounted for about 90% of revenue.

A blanket amnesty for suspended accounts could alert authorities, who have closely monitored Musk’s handling of hate speech since he bought the influential online network.
