In the port city of the Sea of Azov in the south of Ukraine in 2022, at the beginning of the repeated invasion of Russia, the heaviest battles and the most brutal attacks on civilians took place. When Russia seized and occupied Mariupol after a long siege in May 2022, the previously prosperous city was almost razed to the ground.
On January 20, a conference and exhibition on the “rebirth of Mariupol after the war” is planned in Modena, where Russian Consul General in Milan Dmitry Shtodins is also invited to speak, according to the information published on the website of the Russian Cultural Union in Emilia-Romagna.
“We believe that the event is a very cynical, open desecration of the memory of the thousands of civilians killed. The event focuses on Russian propaganda and violates all basic moral principles,” Ukrainian Ambassador to Italy Haroslav Melnyk said in a letter to the Mayor of Modena, Giancarlo Muzzarelli.
He called on Modena to do everything to protect its citizens from misinformation.
Filipo Sensi, a member of the Italian Parliament representing the center-left Democratic Party, has called on his party member Mucarelli to ban the event.
“I am deeply offended that a pro-Russian organization can hold its propaganda event about Mariupol” in the community hall of Modena, Sensi writes on the “X” platform.
The mayor of Modena announced that the city did not support or promote the organization of the event, however, the reservation of the hall took place in accordance with the binding regulations of the municipality and, by reserving the hall, the organizer of the event undertakes to respect the constitutional values.
The Russian Consulate in Milan and the Russian Cultural Union in Emilia-Romagna have not commented on the planned event.
