Reactions to a public transport suggestion at Christmas

Iris Milagros took her husband and friends from the South Bronx by taxi to Fifth Avenue and despite the traffic, she says she doesn’t like using public transportation:

“Why don’t I get on the train even if admission was free, the train is the most dangerous thing in New York right now.”

With the holidays also come the days of increased traffic congestion in the city due to the number of tourists who join to enjoy the different Christmas activities.

For this reason, City Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez is recommending that New Yorkers use public transportation and leave their cars at home, especially with road closures near the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.

Even if it takes longer to get to a place, Milagros says she prefers to stay in traffic in her car.

“For my safety I don’t care, we had an interruption of almost two and a half hours last night but it was worth it because we got there safely,” adds Milagros.

For some New Yorkers, it is better to use public transportation to avoid stress and have more fun with friends.

Lilian Flores is visiting the city and sees the best solution in the metro:

“Well, I think public transport is better because there is a lot of traffic and we are not making any progress.”

Manhattan resident Robert Jimenez says:

“There are many platforms closed as you can see and the train is not closed.

The next few days of traffic congestion will be this Sunday when only passers-by will be able to access a stretch of Fifth Avenue. Also, maybe more traffic is expected on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week than we could see this Friday.
