Reaction to the Controversial Incident at Women’s Football Awards Ceremony

Wiegman is currently the national coach of England. The former national coach of Orange became European champion with the country. At the last World Cup, she lost to Spain in the final.

“We all know about the case with the Spanish football players and it really hurts me, as a coach, a mother of two daughters, a woman and a human being. It shows that we still have a long way to go in women’s football and society. I dedicate this prize to the Spanish national team,” said Wiegman on stage during a ceremony in Monaco, where the draw for the Champions League was also made.

Watch the speech here:

“The team played great football, which everyone enjoyed. This team deserves to be honored and I would like to give them a round of applause.”

Not long after Wiegman’s speech, FIFA boss Gianni Infantino also responded to the incident for the first time. “This kiss should never have happened,” he says. “The well-deserved celebration of these champions was overshadowed by what happened after the final whistle,” Infantino wrote on Instagram.

Unacceptable

In a statement, the Spanish federation said it found Rubiales’ behavior after the World Cup final unacceptable. The presidents of the regional football associations also believe that he has seriously damaged the image of Spanish football. The RFEF also plans to undertake “deep organizational restructuring” in strategic positions within the Football Association. This restructuring should ensure a new phase in the top of Spanish football.

Rubiales, 46, apologized for the incident, but refused to resign. Last week FIFA started disciplinary proceedings and two days later he was suspended for 90 days by the disciplinary committee of the world football association. Due to the provisional suspension, Rubiales is no longer allowed to carry out football-related activities at national and international level until further notice. In recent days, politicians and prominent figures from the football world have had their say on the incident.

The men’s coach of the year award went to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. He won the Champions League with the English top club this year.

The prize for best player went to the Spanish Aitana Bonmatí. Norwegian striker Erling Haaland was voted best player.
