“What happened on stage is totally unacceptable,” said Academy President Janet Yang during a luncheon at the annual Oscar nominees’ party in Beverly Hills. “The response from the organization was insufficient.”
“And we learned from this that the Academy must be fully transparent and accountable for our actions, especially in times of crisis,” she added.
Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences after this incident, and the Academy banned him from attending award ceremonies for ten years, but he is still eligible to run for and win the Academy Awards awarded by the Academy.
