Florida – Cases of malaria re-emerged in the United States after the last 20 years. The United States Centers for Disease and Control (CDC) issued a warning, if the disease caused by the female Anopheles mosquito is detected in Florida and Texas.
Malaria is a serious and potentially fatal disease that is transmitted by the bite of an infective female Anopheles mosquito. Worldwide, more than 240 million cases of malaria occur each year.
“Mosquito surveillance and control measures have been implemented in affected areas,” the CDC wrote on its official website as quoted from detikHealth, Wednesday (28/6/2023).
“All patients have received treatment and are improving,” he continued.
Apart from that, the CDC stated that malaria cases were still relatively small. However, the Anopheles mosquito vector, which is found in many areas of the state, is capable of transmitting malaria if it bites a person infected with malaria.
“The risk is higher in areas where local climatic conditions allow Anopheles mosquitoes to survive most of the year and where travelers from malaria-endemic areas are found,” the CDC said.
Malaria cases in the United States have not occurred since 2003 when eight cases of P. vivax malaria were identified in Palm Beach County, Florida. The patients all had many outdoor activities, such as working in construction, playing golf, tennis or fishing, and were homeless.
