People who want to request their Dutch registration history up to nine years ago no longer have to pay for this. The RDW previously charged 4.65 euros for this, but according to the Dutch Data Protection Authority, this was in violation of the AVG.
This concerns overviews of license plates that were in the name of a person until nine years ago. People who wanted such overviews had to pay 4.65 euros for this. The Consumers’ association found that this was in violation of the GDPR, because according to that privacy law, consumers must be able to request all personal data that a company or organization has about them without hindrance.
The RDW found that they provided extra data for the requested amount and that the 4.65 euros was therefore justified. The Consumers’ Association then approached the Dutch Data Protection Authority to gain clarity. The privacy supervisor ruled in favor of the consumer organization and instructed the AP to make the overviews available free of charge.
After logging in via DigiD, consumers can therefore view an online overview for free of all license plates that were in their name up to nine years ago. This is necessary, for example, for insurance companies to demonstrate that a certain vehicle is no longer in the name of the consumer. The RDW also sends free written overviews. People have to send an email to the RDW for this.
