There was therefore no miracle on this last day of Top 14 for the RCT which had to win with the offensive bonus point against Bordeaux and hope for a Bayonne victory in Lyon.
Neither of the two scenarios happened, thus leaving the “red and black” with necessarily a lot of regrets when taking stock of this season in the Top 14.
But the men of Pierre Mignoni and Franck Azéma ensured their last outing by winning in style against a team from Bordeaux who came with their best players. They also gave the Var defense a hard time by scoring three tries, including the first of the match by Santiago Cordero.
But pushed by a white-hot public, Charles Ollivon’s teammates were able to find the fault five times in the Gironde defense, including a test full of symbolism from Mathieu Bastareaud who will come out just after this ball flattens in the en -goal, which will be the last of his immense career.
The third line will come out to a standing ovation just like Sergio Parisse who also puts away his crampons for good at the end of this match.
A great outing for these two exceptional players who would certainly have preferred the adventure for a few more weeks.
But the LOU, wide winner of Bayonne, will have the privilege of receiving Bordeaux in the play-off match, while the other meeting will oppose the French Stadium to Racing.
