Apple will activate RCS for messages from Free and Bouygues Telecom users in France with the second beta of iOS 18.2. This new functionality, already available for SFR, modernizes exchanges between iOS and Android, but Orange is still behind.
RCS is almost becoming widespread
The iOS 18.2 update therefore constitutes an important step in the evolution of mobile messaging for iPhone users in France. The RCS protocol, already adopted on Android since 2019, makes it possible to replace SMS and MMS by offering enriched and secure exchanges, approaching the iMessage experience. More simply, this will allow Free and Bouygues users to send enriched messages, with options such as delivery receipts, real-time input indicators and sending high definition photos. This feature has been integrated into iPhones equipped with iOS 18 since September, but until then it was only accessible to SFR subscribers (and RED, of course).
Gradual deployment according to operators
Apple integrated RCS into iOS 18 but left each carrier responsible for implementing it by changing their network configurations. SFR activated this service from the launch of iOS 18, while Free and Bouygues decided to wait for the beta version of iOS 18.2. This situation is explained by the technical adjustments necessary for each operator to support this new standard. Strangely, Orange remains behind, with no indication of imminent deployment, leaving its subscribers still limited to classic SMS for their cross-platform communications. Too bad when we know that it is often those who pay the most for their packages.

Features and implications of the arrival of RCS
With RCS, iPhone users can now benefit from more modern and interactive features in their conversations, making exchanges with Android smartphones smoother. This advancement simplifies interactions without requiring a third-party app like WhatsApp, enriching native text exchanges with emoji reactions, enhanced group conversations and sharing of high-resolution images.
The activation of RCS at Free and Bouygues could encourage Orange to move a little and encourage a generalization of this service. The official launch of iOS 18.2, scheduled for early December 2024, will make it possible to see if a third beta will finally activate RCS for Orange customers. This update to iOS 18.2 is also expected to unlock 5G Standalone at Free, another waiting point for its subscribers.
